2014 College Showcase

The 2014 College Winter Showcases turned out to be an excellent tool for players looking to play in college for the next four years. Most importantly, each of the institutions in attendance was pleased not only with the format but the talent as well. They appreciated the small 20 player groups and commented that it afforded them an excellent opportunity to actually see and evaluate each player. East Coast Baseball coaches were given individual comments from the colleges on each player and an assessment of each player’s likely fit. The majority of the players in attendance were met with college interest.

Players and parents were afforded an opportunity to hear first hand from each college coach the criteria a player would need to meet at their school along with an in depth description of that college’s program. Players and parents learned about current roster details, schedules and life as an NCAA student athlete in each school. While players and parents learned that standards are high they also learned that with proper tools and dedication players can meet them.

Players and parents gained insight on the appropriate way to approach the recruiting process. Valuable information on what to include in videos, when to visit and how to put one’s best foot forward came from each coach.

Most critically, participating players will well received by the colleges coaches.  The experiences went a long way to getting a players comfortable in determining how to go about finding the school that will best fit them for the next 4 years.

The Turkey Bowl Recreational Coed Flag Football Tournament on Saturday, November 30 was an afternoon of competitive fun and a successful food drive for the Yorktown Community Help food pantry. Seven teams played flag football at its best on a cold November afternoon at Navajo Fields. Participating teams were the Riverhawks, Brandon’s Team, the Grape Apes, Vigor Way, Swirls (one of the tournament supporters!), The Bros and the Beastie Boys. The stands were full of spectators who braved the frigid temps to watch their stars hit the field.

The championship game was exciting with the Riverhawks and Brandon’s Team battling it out to the end. At half time Riverhawks were up 30-28 and the final was 36-28. The Riverhawks were awarded Turkey Bowl Champs commemorative pinnies. Runners-up, Brandon’s Team took home YSA Turkey Bowl backpacks. Riverhawks MVP, Jesse Mainiero, won a Rawlings Pro5 series official NCAA leather football.
